Tax preparation and bookkeeping in King City, OR

King City began as a retirement community and still has an older demographic than any other city we serve, which makes its tax profile distinctive: retirement distributions, Social Security and estate questions rather than payroll.

Which tax jurisdictions King City is actually in

King City is in Washington County. Oregon’s local tax boundaries do not follow city limits or ZIP codes, so this is worth being precise about.

  • Inside the Metro district, so Metro SHS applies to income above $128,000 single / $205,000 joint.
  • Outside Multnomah County, so Preschool for All does not apply on residency — but it can still apply to income sourced to work performed in the county.
  • No City of Portland taxes.
  • Oregon taxes most retirement income, unlike Washington — which is why the retirement tax comparison matters so much to households here.

The local economy, and what it means for a tax return

Predominantly residential with a high proportion of retired households. Investment income, pension and IRA distributions, and required minimum distributions dominate, alongside a growing number of younger households as the city expands.

We work with clients around the original King City retirement district, the Highway 99W corridor, Tigard immediately north and the Tualatin River to the south.

Who we work with in King City

  • Retired households managing pensions, Social Security and required distributions
  • Investors with income no employer withholds against
  • Households weighing a move to Washington in retirement
  • Newer families arriving as the city expands beyond its original core

Working with us from here

About thirty minutes from the Clackamas office via I-205 and Highway 99W.

Most clients outside the immediate Clackamas area work with us remotely — secure document exchange, a phone or video appointment, and e-filing. If you would rather sit across a desk, both offices do that too: Clackamas and The Dalles.

Questions we get from King City

Does Oregon tax Social Security?

Oregon does not tax Social Security benefits, though they can affect the taxability of other income federally. Most other retirement income is taxable by Oregon.

Would moving to Washington reduce my tax?

For retirement income, potentially quite a lot — Washington has no income tax. The trade-offs and the timing are covered in our retirement guide.

My RMD pushed me over a threshold.

Withholding can be elected on distributions, which handles it without quarterly estimates. Planning the distribution timing is the other lever.

Can I have tax withheld from my IRA distribution instead of paying estimates?

Yes, and for most retired households it is the simpler route. Withholding is treated as paid evenly across the year, which makes it more forgiving than quarterly estimates if a distribution lands late in the year.
