Questions

Questions about services and prices

Are the prices on this page the final fee?

No. They are starting prices: the least we charge for the simplest version of each job. What generally moves the number is how many jurisdictions you file in, whether your books are ready, how many business or rental schedules you have, your investment activity, and whether a prior year needs fixing. We quote the exact fee before any work begins.

Why aren’t payroll, IRS representation and tax planning priced?

Because each is scoped to the case in front of us. Payroll depends on headcount, pay frequency and which jurisdictions you withhold for; representation depends on the notice or audit you have; planning is priced against what is being decided. Call and we will quote it.

Is a business return priced on top of my personal return?

It depends on the entity. A Schedule C or Schedule E business is part of your personal return and falls in the small business, rental and farm band, which starts at $525. An S-corp, C-corp or partnership files its own return, starting at $1,900, and you still have a personal return as well: two engagements and two fees.

When do I pay, and do you take a percentage of my refund?

Fees are due when the return is filed. We never take a percentage of your refund: a refund-based fee gives the preparer a financial interest in the size of your refund, which is the opposite of the incentive you want them to have.

What does the price of a return include?

The federal and state return, prepared and reviewed in-house before you sign it; a comparison against last year, so a number that moved gets explained; electronic filing and the acknowledgements that come back from it; and the conversation afterwards. If the IRS or the Oregon Department of Revenue writes to you about a return we prepared, reading the letter is not a separate engagement.

How is bookkeeping billed?

By the hour, starting at $85 an hour, for monthly bookkeeping, catch-up work and QuickBooks setup. Catch-up months take longer than steady months, and once the books are clean the monthly cost generally settles into a predictable number.

What do I need for a notary appointment?

Current, government-issued photo ID; the complete document, unsigned; every signer, each with their own ID; and any witnesses the document requires. Notary services start at $10 per stamp at both offices, including loan signings. Call ahead during tax season, when the offices are busy. A notary cannot give legal advice or choose the certificate wording for you.

Can you prepare returns for states other than Oregon?

Yes. We prepare non-resident and part-year state returns and work remotely with clients across the United States. Most of our multi-state work involves Oregon and Washington, along with California, Idaho and Arizona. Multi-state returns
