Columbia County

Tax preparation and bookkeeping in St. Helens, OR

St. Helens is the Columbia County seat, well outside every Portland-area tax jurisdiction, with an economy shaped by the river, industry and a long commute for those who work in the metro.

Which tax jurisdictions St. Helens is actually in

St. Helens is in Columbia County. Oregon’s local tax boundaries do not follow city limits or ZIP codes, so this is worth being precise about.

  • Outside the Metro district, so Metro SHS does not apply to residents here.
  • Outside Multnomah County, so Preschool for All does not apply on residency — but it can still apply to income sourced to work performed in the county.
  • Outside the TriMet district, so there is no TriMet payroll or self-employment tax — the statewide transit tax on wages still applies.
  • The long commute makes remote and hybrid work common here, which makes the sourcing question — and any Oregon local tax withholding — worth checking annually.

The local economy, and what it means for a tax return

Industrial and river-related employment, county government, and a small-business base serving the town. A substantial commuter population works in the metro, with a growing remote share given the distance.

We work with clients around the historic riverfront and courthouse district, the Highway 30 corridor, the Columbia River waterfront and Sauvie Island to the south.

What we do most of in St. Helens

Working with us from here

About an hour from the Clackamas office. Most St. Helens clients work with us remotely.

Most clients outside the immediate Clackamas area work with us remotely — secure document exchange, a phone or video appointment, and e-filing. If you would rather sit across a desk, both offices do that too: Clackamas and The Dalles.

Questions we get from St. Helens

Do any Portland taxes apply here?

Not on residency — Columbia County is outside all of them. Work-sourced income is a different question.

I work from home three days a week for a Portland employer.

Then a smaller share of your income is sourced to the Portland jurisdictions than a full-time office schedule would produce. Worth checking against the withholding.

Can we do everything remotely?

Yes. Secure document exchange and a phone call is how most of the northern corridor works with us.

My schedule changed years ago but my payslip did not. Is it too late?

Generally three years remain open, so more than one year is often still claimable. Start the workday record now regardless — it makes this year straightforward even if the earlier ones need reconstructing.
