Tax Preparation

Individual tax preparation for the Portland metro, SW Washington and the Gorge

A straightforward personal return in this region still touches four or five filing authorities. The federal return, the Oregon return, possibly Metro SHS, possibly Multnomah PFA, and the Arts Tax if you live in the City of Portland.

Who this is for

  • W-2 employees with anything beyond a single job — RSUs, a second income, a spouse working across the river
  • Retirees managing Social Security, pensions and required minimum distributions
  • Households with investment income, capital gains or a stock plan from an employer such as Intel or Nike
  • Anyone who has moved into or out of Oregon during the year
  • People who filed themselves for years and hit something the software would not handle

What is included

  • Federal Form 1040 with all supporting schedules
  • Oregon Form OR-40, OR-40-N or OR-40-P as your residency requires
  • Metro SHS and Multnomah PFA returns where you meet the thresholds
  • Portland Arts Tax filing
  • A prior-year comparison so you can see what actually changed
  • Estimated payment vouchers for next year where they are needed

The Oregon-specific things worth knowing

Oregon has no sales tax and a comparatively high income tax, which changes the shape of a personal return here. Deductions that matter in other states matter less; timing of income matters more. Two items come up constantly:

  • The kicker. In surplus years Oregon returns money as a credit calculated from your prior-year liability, not as a check. See how the Oregon kicker works.
  • Local thresholds. Metro SHS and Multnomah PFA are assessed on income above set thresholds and are easy to trip the first year a household’s income rises.
I live in Vancouver and work in Portland. Which return do I file?

Generally an Oregon non-resident return, Form OR-40-N, reporting Oregon-source wages only. Read the full explanation — the answer depends on where you physically performed the work, not where your employer is headquartered.

Do you handle stock compensation?

Yes. RSUs, ESPP and ISO/NSO exercises are common in this market, particularly around Hillsboro and Beaverton, and each has a different tax treatment and a different trap.

How far back can you amend a return?

Generally three years from the original filing date to claim a refund. If you think a prior year was wrong, bring it in — we will tell you whether amending is worth doing.

Do you file the Portland Arts Tax?

Yes, as part of your return where you are a City of Portland resident above the income floor. It is a small tax with an outsized penalty history.
