Which tax jurisdictions Camas is actually in
Camas is in Clark County, Washington. That determines which taxes reach you — and which Oregon ones can still reach your income even though you do not live there.
- Washington levies no personal income tax, so there is no state return on wages — but Oregon workdays are Oregon-source income. See the cross-border hub.
- No Metro SHS or Preschool for All on residency — but both can reach income sourced to those jurisdictions where you work there.
- Washington capital gains tax can apply to large securities sales, which matters for households with significant equity compensation.
- A Camas-based business may owe Washington B&O tax and city business obligations.
The local economy, and what it means for a tax return
A technology and advanced manufacturing base with a historic mill town core, and a residential population weighted toward senior professionals working for Portland-area and Hillsboro employers. Equity compensation is common here, which adds a sourcing dimension that a simple day count does not resolve on its own.
We work with clients around the downtown mill town core, the Highway 14 corridor, the Prune Hill and Grass Valley residential areas and Washougal immediately east.
Who we work with in Camas
- Senior technology and manufacturing staff working for Hillsboro and Portland employers
- Households with restricted stock units vesting across a multi-year period spanning two states
- Hybrid commuters whose day count changed after 2020 and whose withholding did not
- Small businesses in the mill town core with Washington B&O and city obligations

Tax situations we see in Camas
Equity is sourced over the vesting period, not at vest
This is the Camas complication. Wages allocate between Oregon and Washington on a current-year day count. Restricted stock generally sources by reference to where the services were performed across the whole vesting period, which for a four-year grant means four years of work patterns rather than this year’s. The two fractions are rarely the same number, and applying the wage fraction to the vest is the most common error we correct here.
Two Washington taxes that do exist
Households at Camas income levels are the ones most likely to meet Washington’s capital gains excise tax, which applies to certain long-term gains above a substantial standard deduction, with real estate and retirement accounts excluded. A Camas business meanwhile owes Washington B&O on gross receipts and may have City of Camas obligations of its own. "No income tax" is accurate about wages and misleading about everything else.
The Hillsboro commute is not the Portland commute
A Camas resident working in Hillsboro is inside the Metro district on those workdays but not inside Multnomah County, so Metro SHS can apply to the sourced share while Preschool for All does not. A colleague commuting to downtown Portland is inside both. Same city, same salary, different local tax position depending entirely on which side of the Willamette the office is.
Working with us from here
About 35 minutes from the Clackamas office via I-205 and Highway 14. Most Camas clients work with us remotely.
Most clients outside the immediate Clackamas area work with us remotely — secure document exchange, a phone or video appointment, and e-filing. If you would rather sit across a desk, both offices do that too: Clackamas and The Dalles.
Questions we get from Camas
Does living in Camas rather than Vancouver change anything for Oregon tax?
No. Both are Washington, and the analysis turns on where you work, not which Clark County city you live in.
How are my RSUs taxed if I work in Oregon part of the week?
Generally by reference to where services were performed over the vesting period, which is not necessarily the same fraction as your current-year day count. It needs calculating rather than assuming.
I am thinking of selling stock. Does Washington tax it?
Washington has a capital gains tax on certain long-term gains above a substantial standard deduction, with real estate and retirement accounts excluded. See who actually pays it.
My RSUs vested this year. How do I work out the Oregon share?
By looking at where you performed services over the vesting period, grant by grant. It needs the grant dates, the vesting schedule and your work pattern across those years — which is why keeping the workday record matters beyond the current return.
Does living in Camas rather than Vancouver change my Oregon position?
No. Both are Clark County, Washington. The analysis turns on where you work, not which Washington city you live in.
