Wasco County

Tax preparation and bookkeeping in Dufur, OR

Dufur and Mosier are small Wasco County communities close to our Gorge office, both agricultural, both well outside every metropolitan tax jurisdiction.

Which tax jurisdictions Dufur is actually in

Dufur is in Wasco County. Oregon’s local tax boundaries do not follow city limits or ZIP codes, so this is worth being precise about.

  • Outside the Metro district, so Metro SHS does not apply to residents here.
  • Outside Multnomah County, so Preschool for All does not apply on residency — but it can still apply to income sourced to work performed in the county.
  • Outside the TriMet district, so there is no TriMet payroll or self-employment tax — the statewide transit tax on wages still applies.
  • Combining farm income with off-farm wages creates a distinctive estimated-payment problem — the wage withholding rarely covers the farm income, and the farm income arrives all at once.

The local economy, and what it means for a tax return

Wheat and dryland farming around Dufur; orchards, vineyards and small acreage around Mosier. Both communities have a high proportion of households where farm income is combined with off-farm wages.

We work with clients around the Dufur valley and Highway 197, the Mosier orchards and the Rowena loops, the wheat country south of The Dalles and the Columbia River just north.

Who we work with in Dufur

What we do most of in Dufur

Working with us from here

Fifteen to twenty minutes from our The Dalles office — Dufur south on Highway 197, Mosier west on I-84.

Most clients outside the immediate Clackamas area work with us remotely — secure document exchange, a phone or video appointment, and e-filing. If you would rather sit across a desk, both offices do that too: Clackamas and The Dalles.

Questions we get from Dufur

Should I pay estimates or increase withholding?

For a household with a wage job, increasing withholding is usually simpler and safer, because withholding counts as paid evenly across the year regardless of when it was actually withheld.

Do any city or metro taxes apply here?

None. Wasco County is outside every Portland-area jurisdiction.

How far is the office?

Fifteen to twenty minutes to our downtown The Dalles office from either community.

The harvest check arrives in one month. How do we avoid a penalty?

Usually by raising the withholding on the wage side of the household rather than paying an estimate, because withholding is treated as paid evenly across the year. Where there is no wage job, the annualised method does the same work.
