What changes on the move date
A move mid-year makes you a part-year resident of Oregon, filing Form OR-40-P. Oregon taxes all income received while you were an Oregon resident, plus Oregon-source income received while you were not. Washington taxes no wage income at any point. So the practical question for anything large is simple: which side of the move date did it land on?
| Income event | Realised while Oregon resident | Realised while Washington resident |
|---|---|---|
| Salary for work done in Oregon | Oregon taxable | Oregon taxable (Oregon-source) |
| Salary for remote work done in WA | Oregon taxable (residency) | Not Oregon taxable |
| Sale of stock or crypto | Oregon taxable | Generally not Oregon taxable |
| RSU vesting | Oregon taxable | Depends on where the services were performed during vesting |
| Sale of a business | Oregon taxable | Depends on sourcing — get advice first |
| Retirement distribution | Oregon taxable | Generally not Oregon taxable |
| Sale of Oregon real property | Oregon taxable | Oregon taxable (Oregon-source) |
Establishing residency, properly
Residency is a factual determination, and a state that stands to lose a large amount of tax will look at the facts. Moving in a way that is clearly documented matters:
- A permanent home in the new state — bought or leased, not a relative’s spare room
- Driver license and vehicle registration changed promptly
- Voter registration moved
- Where you actually spend your time, which is the fact most often examined
- Where your family lives, where your children attend school
- Banking, professional relationships, doctors and dentists
- Mail, and the address you give to employers and financial institutions
A short checklist for a planned move
- 1Talk to us before the move if any large income event is anywhere near it.
- 2Fix the move date, and keep evidence of it — lease or closing documents, utility connections, moving invoices.
- 3Update payroll withholding in the same week, not at year end.
- 4Update the address with every financial institution that reports to a state.
- 5Change license, registration and voter registration promptly.
- 6Keep the closing statement if you sold an Oregon home — Oregon-source property gain stays Oregon-source.
- 7Expect two returns for the year of the move: a part-year Oregon return, and possibly a local Portland-area return.
Can I move for a month to avoid tax on a sale?
No. Temporary relocation around a transaction is precisely the pattern that gets examined, and a residency claim without genuine facts behind it does not survive. Real moves work; paper moves do not.
What if I keep my Oregon house?
Retaining an Oregon home does not automatically make you an Oregon resident, but it is a fact that weighs against a clean break — particularly if you spend significant time there.
When is the best time of year to move?
It depends entirely on your income pattern. For someone with a large Q4 bonus or vest, the timing can be worth a great deal; for a steady salary it barely matters.
Do I still owe Metro SHS or Preschool for All after moving?
For the resident portion of the year, and afterwards on any income still sourced to those jurisdictions — for instance, if you continue working at a Portland office.
Get the sourcing right before you file
Cross-border returns turn on facts nobody asks you about until it is too late. An appointment settles which state taxes what.
