Multnomah County

Tax preparation for Hollywood

The Hollywood district is a north-east commercial center with a mix of professional offices, medical and dental practices, and long-established independent businesses along Sandy Boulevard.

Which tax jurisdictions Hollywood is actually in

Hollywood is in Multnomah County. Oregon’s local tax boundaries do not follow city limits or ZIP codes, so this is worth being precise about.

  • All four Portland layers apply.
  • Owner-practitioners with employees face the full stack: payroll compliance, Metro SHS and PFA withholding, and city and county business taxes.
  • Practice owners are common candidates for the PTE-E election.

The local economy, and what it means for a tax return

Healthcare and dental practices, professional offices, independent retail and food along Sandy and NE Broadway. Practices with a handful of employees and real payroll are the characteristic business here.

We work with clients around the Hollywood Theatre, Sandy Boulevard, the Hollywood Transit Center and NE Broadway toward the Lloyd district.

What we do most of in Hollywood

Tax situations we see in Hollywood

A practice owner meets both sides of the local taxes

An owner-practitioner is an employer and a high earner at once, which means Metro SHS and Preschool for All appear twice: as withholding obligations for staff above the thresholds, and personally on the owner’s own return. Practices frequently have one half right and the other missing entirely, usually the employer half, and usually because the payroll was set up before anyone crossed a threshold.

Working with us from here

About twenty-five minutes from the Clackamas office via I-205 and I-84.

Most clients outside the immediate Clackamas area work with us remotely — secure document exchange, a phone or video appointment, and e-filing. If you would rather sit across a desk, both offices do that too: Clackamas and The Dalles.

Questions we get from Hollywood

Do we have to withhold Preschool for All for employees?

Employers have withholding obligations for employees working in the county above the threshold. It is one of the two most commonly missed obligations for Portland-area employers.

We are a small practice. Is bookkeeping worth outsourcing?

Usually — a practice with payroll and equipment has enough moving parts that monthly reconciliation pays for itself in avoided problems.

Should the practice make a PTE-E election?

Often worth modeling for owner-practitioners over the SALT cap. The deadlines are firm.

One of our staff just crossed the threshold mid-year. What do we do?

Start withholding from the next available payroll and tell the employee, so they can decide whether to make an estimated payment for the earlier part of the year. Catching it mid-year is materially cheaper than at filing.

We are bringing in an associate. Employee or contractor?

For a practitioner working in your rooms, on your schedule, with your equipment and your patients, almost always an employee. Getting that wrong is one of the more expensive errors available to a small practice, because the assessment covers every year and everyone in the same category.
