Bookkeeping in The Dalles, Oregon

Bookkeeping from an office in downtown The Dalles, for businesses whose year is shaped by a harvest, a tourist season or a river.

Why The Dalles is different

Agricultural operations need crop-year accounting, equipment schedules and seasonal payroll that reconciles to what was actually filed with Oregon.

Hospitality and river-based businesses have cash flow that bears no relationship to a calendar quarter, which changes both the reporting and the estimated payment strategy.

None of the Portland-area local taxes apply here, which simplifies the compliance side considerably — the complexity in Gorge books is operational, not jurisdictional.

Which tax jurisdictions apply here

  • Outside the Metro district, so Metro SHS does not apply to residents here.
  • Outside Multnomah County, so Preschool for All does not apply on residency — but it can still apply to income sourced to work performed in the county.
  • No City of Portland taxes of any kind — no Arts Tax, no Business License Tax.
  • Outside the TriMet district, so there is no TriMet payroll or self-employment tax — the statewide transit tax on wages still applies.
  • The statewide transit tax still applies to wages for work performed here, as it does everywhere in Oregon.

Questions from The Dalles

Do I owe Metro SHS or Preschool for All living in The Dalles?

Not on residency — both are Portland-area jurisdictions. If you work in the Metro district or Multnomah County part of the year, income sourced there can still be reached.

Do you handle farm returns?

Yes. Schedule F, equipment depreciation, seasonal labor, crop insurance proceeds and the timing questions that come with an orchard year are routine work at this office.

I live in Washington across the bridge. Which return do I file?

If you work in Oregon, an Oregon non-resident return on the Oregon-source portion. Klickitat and Skamania county residents working in Wasco or Hood River counties are in exactly the same position as Clark County commuters — see the cross-border hub.
