How we chose
- Local office: each practice names an office in a Clackamas County city on its own website: Canby, Clackamas, Lake Oswego, Oregon City, Sandy or West Linn.
- Credential: we note the credential each site states, in the site’s own words: Enrolled Agent, Oregon Licensed Tax Consultant or CPA. Where a site states none, we say so and describe its services only.
- Services: each one lists business tax work, business accounting or business tax planning on its own site.
Small business owners in Clackamas County range from sole proprietors filing a Schedule C with the family return to S-corporations with staff on payroll. The practices below differ in which end of that range they describe on their websites, so match the practice to the returns you actually file. In Oregon, anyone preparing personal returns for pay needs a license from the Oregon Board of Tax Practitioners unless they are a CPA or an attorney, who are exempt. An Enrolled Agent is licensed by the IRS and can represent taxpayers before it on any tax matter.

What to ask before you hire a business tax preparer
- Which returns do you prepare every year? A Schedule C, a partnership return and an S-corp return are different work. Ask whether your return type is routine for the practice.
- Who keeps the books? If the preparer does not keep your books, ask what they need from your bookkeeper and in what form. Clean, reconciled books are what a business return is built from.
- Can you run payroll and the year-end forms? W-2s and 1099-NECs for 2026 are due by 1 February 2027. The 1099-NEC reporting threshold is $2,000 for payments made after 31 December 2025.
- Will you help with estimates and entity questions? Ask whether planning happens during the year or only at filing time. See tax planning.
- Who signs, and who answers the IRS? Ask for the signer’s credential and license number, and who would represent the business if a notice arrives.
Do I need a CPA for my small business taxes?
Not necessarily. CPAs, Enrolled Agents and Oregon-licensed preparers all prepare business returns. The right fit depends on your entity and your books, so talk to a preparer about your situation.
Can one practice handle bookkeeping, payroll and the tax return?
Some do. Crystal Clear Tax Solutions Inc, for example, lists taxes, bookkeeping and payroll on its website. We offer all three as well: Katie Wells keeps the books and runs payroll, and Heather Perkins, Licensed Tax Consultant# 35746-C, prepares the return.
When should I talk to a preparer about an S-corp election?
Before the year you want it to apply, where you can. The election has deadlines and changes how you pay yourself. See entity selection and talk to a preparer about your numbers.
What is the 1099-NEC threshold for 2026?
$2,000 for payments made after 31 December 2025. Forms for the 2026 year are due by 1 February 2027. See 1099 contractor filing.
