How we chose
- Local office: each practice names an office in Clackamas or in a neighboring city (Gladstone or Milwaukie) on its own website.
- Credential: we note the credential each site states, in the site’s own words: Enrolled Agent, Oregon Licensed Tax Consultant, Licensed Tax Preparer or CPA. Where a site states none, we say so and describe its services only.
- Services: each one lists tax preparation for individuals, small businesses, or both.
The credential behind a preparer matters more than the sign on the door. In Oregon, anyone preparing personal returns for pay must be licensed or registered with the Oregon Board of Tax Practitioners unless they are exempt, as CPAs and attorneys are. Since 5 June 2026, an Enrolled Agent can register with the Board as a Registered Enrolled Agent. An Enrolled Agent is licensed by the IRS and has unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before it. Whoever you choose, ask who will prepare and sign your return, and check that person’s license yourself.

What to ask any preparer in Clackamas
- Who prepares and signs the return? Ask for that person’s credential and license number, and check it with the Oregon Board of Tax Practitioners Licensee Lookup or, for an Enrolled Agent, the IRS verification tool.
- Do you handle the local filings? Some Clackamas County households also file for the Metro Supportive Housing Services tax, or earn income across the river in Washington. Ask whether the preparer handles those alongside the Oregon return. See multi-state returns.
- Is the office open after 15 April? Letters from the IRS and the Oregon Department of Revenue arrive all year. Ask how to reach the practice in the off-season and who can speak to the IRS for you.
- How is the fee set? Ask for a starting price and what moves it, before any work begins.
Book early if you can. The 2026 tax year return is due 15 April 2027, and W-2s and 1099-NECs for 2026 are due out by 1 February 2027. The tax document checklist lists what to gather, and the tax deadline calendar has every date.
Is there a tax office in Clackamas open outside filing season?
Our Clackamas office works by appointment outside Jan 11 to April 15. For other practices, check their own websites or call, since hours change with the season.
What is the difference between an Enrolled Agent and a Licensed Tax Consultant?
An Enrolled Agent is licensed by the IRS and can represent taxpayers before it on any tax matter. A Licensed Tax Consultant is licensed by the Oregon Board of Tax Practitioners to prepare returns and supervise Licensed Tax Preparers. Some preparers, including Heather Perkins, Licensed Tax Consultant# 35746-C, hold both.
Do I need a CPA for my return?
A CPA, an Oregon-licensed preparer and an Enrolled Agent can all prepare an Oregon personal return. The right fit depends on your situation, so talk to a preparer about what your return involves before you book.
Can I work with a Clackamas preparer without coming into the office?
Ask each practice. We work with clients in person in Clackamas and The Dalles, and remotely across the United States.
