How we chose
- Local office: each practice names a location in a Clackamas County city on its own website: Clackamas, Gladstone, Happy Valley, Lake Oswego or Oregon City. Two of them give a city but no street address.
- Bookkeeping on offer: each one lists bookkeeping for businesses on its own site, whether as its main work or alongside tax preparation.
- Credentials: where a site states a credential, we repeat it in the site’s own words. Where it states none, we describe its services only.
The practices below fall into two groups. Some are bookkeeping and payroll shops that hand the finished books to your tax preparer. Others are tax practices that also keep books, so the same office closes the year and prepares the return. Neither is better in general. It depends on whether you already have a tax preparer you want to keep.
1. Heather’s Tax Service & More
Our bookkeeping is run by Katie Wells, a bookkeeper with more than 25 years of experience keeping books for small businesses. Katie works in QuickBooks, sets it up for clients, and handles payroll, accounts payable and receivable, reconciliations and monthly reporting. Because she works inside a tax practice, the books she closes go straight to Heather Perkins, Enrolled Agent and Licensed Tax Consultant# 35746-C, or Pam Wagner, Licensed Tax Preparer# 1924349-P, for the return.
- Monthly bookkeeping: transactions categorized, accounts reconciled and reports each month.
- Catch-up bookkeeping: for books that have fallen months or years behind, brought current before a return or a year-end review.
- QuickBooks setup: chart of accounts, bank rules and training.
- Starting price: bookkeeping starts at $85 an hour, billed for the time it takes. A starting point, not a quote; see pricing.
- Where: our Clackamas office at 9136 SE St Helens Street, Suite J, Clackamas OR 97015, and remote service across the United States.
- What we do not do: our bookkeeping is for businesses. We prepare trust tax returns on the tax side, but we do not keep books for trusts.

3. Clackamas Income Tax & Accounting Inc.

What to ask any bookkeeper before you hire
- Which software do you work in? Ask whether the bookkeeper works in the system you already use, or will move you to theirs, and who owns the file if you part ways.
- What happens each month? Ask what a month includes: categorizing, bank and card reconciliations, reports, and by what date the books close.
- Can you catch us up first? If the books are behind, ask how catch-up work is scoped and billed before monthly work begins.
- Do you run payroll too? Payroll and bookkeeping touch the same accounts. If they are split between two providers, ask how they will reconcile.
- How do the books reach the tax preparer? Ask what your preparer will receive at year end, and when. See year-end planning.
Should my bookkeeper and my tax preparer be the same firm?
Not necessarily. Some owners like one office closing the year and preparing the return; others keep a separate bookkeeper and preparer they already trust. What matters is that the books are reconciled and reach the preparer on time.
How far behind can the books be before catch-up work is needed?
If accounts have not been reconciled for more than a month or two, expect some catch-up. Ask any bookkeeper to look at the file first and tell you how it will be scoped. See catch-up bookkeeping.
Do you keep books for trusts?
No. Our bookkeeping is for businesses. We do prepare trust tax returns; see tax preparation.
Can Katie work with the QuickBooks file I already have?
Yes. Katie works in QuickBooks, and can set up a new file or work in an existing one. See QuickBooks setup and support.
